Difficulty of JLPT2

I'm in that awkward stage where I think I could probably pass JLPT3 easily, but JLPT2 seems like it will be out of my range. However, since you only need a 60% to pass JLPT2, that makes me wonder...
they recommend that you know a certain amount of vocabulary, a certain amount of grammar, kanji, and so on. Does this mean that if I know about 60% of what they recommend, I might still be able to pass? Or does it mean that you need to know about that much in order to pass with 60%?

The JLPT is significantly

The JLPT2 is significantly harder than the JLPT 3. This is one of the reasons why next year they will be adding a JLPT between 2 and 3.

Some people say JLPT3 is equivalent to about 1 year of college study, and the JLPT2 to 3 or so.

However, you do only need a 60% to pass. Since there are a lot of trick questions, I doubt that knowingly only 60% of the material would be enough to pass. But, a significant part of JLPT success is preparing for the test, and you have plenty of time to do that.

The big question is your ability to read kanji: if you excel at it, you're likely to pass the 2kyuu. If you have serious trouble with kanji, it's probably better to take the 3kyuu.

Probably the best way to find out is to take a practice test. You can buy them for about 1000yen/each and just take a few hours, sit down, and actually take the test. Then calculate your score and see if you're even close to passing-- or willing to do the work in the next few months to get up to speed.
