Kanji in Context Decks

First of all, I want to say that the information on this site is definately inspiring for those who hope to one day be at least proficient in the language - even those who will likely never live in Japan.

I read the reviews of Kanji in Context (which pushed me over the edge into buying them after considering them as a possible next step for me for some time) and wanted to ask if would someone would be willing to share their Kanji in Context SRS deck?

Also, I have not read about it on this site, so thought I would add that I opted to follow "Kanji Odyssey 2001" before moving along to KiC. It follows a similar pattern, but the ebook form has stroke order, around 3 sentences per kanji, each with full audio and english translation. The first and second "volumes" of the ebook cover 1110 kanji, and the remaining volume 3 includes vocabulary lists for the rest (no audio). The content was good in my opinion, but the sentences were quite boring, and the grammar was too simple at times. The audio itself is on the cd in a single directory, so it is easy to copy it over to an mp3 player (already in mp3 format, even).

Anyway, if someone is willing to share their KiC deck, please let me know!

Please don't share copyrighted material

As noted elsewhere on the forums, please do not post links or instructions to downloading copyrighted material. Sharing a deck of the Kanji in Context materials is probably a violation of copyright law.

Kanji in Context Deck

As noted in the post, I do own the workbooks - so I am not requesting access to any copywritten material that I have not already paid for, nor am I requesting a public link or instructions for public download. I'm sorry if this did not come off clear in the original post.

With that noted, is the question still unacceptable? If so I will delete the post altogether.

Thanks,

You can leave the post up,

You can leave the post up, as it is helpful to others who may have the same question.

Unfortunately, in the US, where this site is hosted, even if you own the materials, you are not allowed to share copies, even for personal use. I do wish the system were different myself, but as it is not, we have to live with what we've got.

I do have hope one day though that textbook publishers themselves will begin selling Mnemosyne-ready decks as supplements to their printed works. That would be a wonderful change.

Kaeru

Though against sharing an

Though against sharing an entire deck, would you be against sharing strictly a sentence pack with those who prove they own the original materials? This could save others a great deal of time typing. I would gladly make my own deck, it's just the typing of sentence that becomes so tedius.

After doing a bit of reading, I don't think copyright restrictions would hinder such a request:

http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html

the restrictions of the fair use act:

The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes (obviously educational / non-commercial)

The nature of the copyrighted work (educational text?)

The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole (sentences that are completely "useless" without the rest of their "system" and with each sentece I include a "source" which is essentially a citation - though for private viewing copies of entire works have been approved)

The effect of the use upon the potential market for, or value of, the copyrighted work (I already own it, so my portion of market influence already fulfilled)

If you still see this as unreasonable, I can attempt to contact the publisher for permission to use their sentences in an SRS for personal study.

I hope my questioning has not been too bothersome.

Sincerely,

nrg1701

Greetings, You are welcome

Greetings,

You are welcome to bring up these points. I cannot honor your request, though, for the following reasons.

1) I am not a Japanese teacher, and you are not my Japanese student. Therefore, it is not clearly "educational," nor, since I do make some income from this site, "non-commercial."

2) The sentences comprise the entirety of the content of the workbooks. Regardless of how useless they are without the other books, they are works unto themselves and distributing nearly complete copies of works is almost never allowed. For this reason alone, I am almost certain that there is no chance that it is "fair use."

3+4) The nature of the work- as it is a text book, the publishers make money every time students purchase the book. As making the workbooks' content freely available (I'm not sure we could make a legal test that would pass muster to "prove" one owns a given work) would certainly undermine the publisher's interest, this cannot be said to be fair use.

***

But don't let this get you down. The truth is, it's better for you if you put the sentences in there yourself. If you don't feel a sentence is necessary, don't add it. If you think you need some more information/furigana, add it.

I haven't met anyone who successfully used an SRS to study anything who didn't make the cards themselves. That is the real secret of the process- taking responsibility for your own learning. If you think it takes too much time, take a slower pace. If you're impatient, work faster.

But just like you can't have someone write your term paper for you, you can't have someone else plan your memory. If you outsource that kind of task, you run a great danger of not learning anything.

Cheers,
Kaeru
