Book to learn radicals

After reading some threads in the forum, I came to the conclusion that a good start would be to learn the Kanji radicals. Can anybody recommend a book that teaches the radicals?

Regards, Stefan

"Learn to Write Chinese Characters" by Johan Bjorksten

"Learn to Write Chinese Characters" by Johan Bjorksten is the single best book I have ever seen for this kind of thing. It's about Chinese, not Japanese, and it doesn't have any practice drills or anything like that. What it is is a short, clearly-written guide to how characters work. It's good for quickly getting a feeling for stroke order, direction, and number. It also has a list of some of the most common radicals. I'd recommend reading this book (which should only take a couple of hours) and then just using the multi-radical lookup on WWWJDIC as much as possible.

I think it's better to learn

I think it's better to learn kana and some basic Japanese grammar first to make sure you like it, before learning the radicals. The radicals are best approached later, when you can already read some Japanese.

Although learning the radicals first may seem to be the best approach, I don't think it's worthwhile until you have decided that you really, really want to learn Japanese. If you're not certain, it's too much trouble and you'll probably be frustrated more than anything.

For that reason, I recommend using one of the excellent traditional kanji dictionaries for learning the radicals- but, these all require proficient Japanese.

Also, most decent (older) Japanese textbooks will have the radicals explained in them.

Kaeru

Thanks for the comment. I am

Thanks for the comment. I am already familiar with Kana and the Japanese grammar (toward JLPT3 level) and decided now to attack the Kanji characters in more detail. Because I have never studied the radicals, but are already familiar with some of them, I am looking for an introductory text that gives an overview. Which dictionary do you have in mind? Then I can have a look myself and judge by my skills.

Thanks, Stefan

P.S. For example, I came across the following book

http://www.amazon.com/Lets-Learn-Kanji-Introduction-Components/dp/477002...

and was wondering, if it is a good starting point or not.

No, the dictionaries I am

No, the dictionaries I am referring to are called 漢和辞典, and they are entirely in Japanese. You would probably need to be above 2kyuu level with strong kanji skills to use such a dictionary.

Instead, I would use one of the JLPT prep books if passing the JLPT is your goal. A general kanji book won't be of much help for the JLPT, anyway.

Kaeru
