Japanese compared to Chinese

I am not sure if you can answer this but I will ask. I have the opportunity to take both Japanese and Chinese classes coming up soon. Could I benefit from taking the Japanese classes first and would it make learning Chinese easier.

If you want to learn both

If you want to learn both languages, it is probably easier to start with Chinese first. Chinese is closer to English (subject verb object grammar), and has the wonderful rule of one character = one sound. Going from Japanese to Chinese is possible as well, and to some degree your Japanese study will help you, but the most important thing is to master the large number of new kanji (Chinese characters), so for this starting with Chinese is probably your best bet.

Kaeru
